john morgan’s tomb. 15th century
john morgan was the steward to the duchy of lancaster and the last governor of the three castles, grosmont, skenfrith and white. the top stone of this highly decorated tomb depicts john morgan and his wife with his four sons appearing on the south side and their wives on the north elevation. this form of family burial extends back into prehistory with its rectilinear stones echoing the neolithic chambered tombs and bronze aged cists, where extended families and whole communities were brought together in death.
